Reiki Symbols

This Kanji is the character for Rei Ki.

As explained on the Reiki Process or attunement page, Reiki symbols are given to Level II and Level III/Master Reiki practitioners during their attunements.

These symbols were kept secret by Mrs. Takata.  She instructed all her 22 masters to keep them secret and never even draw them.

Nowadays, you can find several books with the symbols published.  Is it a big deal?

Personally, I am opposed to the publishing of the symbols.  I don't want to perpetuate a secret society, but the symbols deserve respect.  Reiki is an interesting system - not a religion by any means, but it becomes a way of life.  And you find yourself feeling a great deal of respect and, to a certain extent, awe for the symbols and for Reiki energy.  It is that feeling of respect that dissuades me from making the symbols public.

Also, all Reiki masters will agree, I am sure, that the symbols by themselves do not contain any special power if the person has not been attuned.  So, you might ask, if they aren't powerful, what's the problem?  There are people who will not understand that or might be unethical and will try to sell Reiki services when they are not truly transmitting Reiki energies.

And lastly, the Reiki symbols are fluid.  In the transferring from one Master to a new Master, symbols change - just like in a child's circle game of Telephone.  But Reiki seems to adjust to these changes and the energy still flows.  What we do find is that the symbol you are given imprints on you.  You will find differences in the symbols published.  So why bother?  Wait for the right time for you to be attuned.  Find the right master.  One with whom you resonate.  You will receive your symbols when the time is right.  Until then, don't worry about which symbol is right or what book says what.

In Reiki light and love.
