The History of Reiki

The History of Reiki is fluid

How can history be fluid?  We discover more daily.  You will find many web sites stating that they are the TRUE Reiki System.  I approach this from the perspective that Reiki, true Reiki, true connection to the universal energy, has to be based in love.

Love is expansive and understanding.  That means we should be open to new information and should assimilate it appropriately.  What we must never lose sight of is that Reiki Energy doesn't care how it first became to light (white light?) to people.  Reiki energy does not look back to its journey to our consciousness.  It is concerned with the now.  And in the now, it only wants to heal and to love.

So if we get caught up in controversy about Reiki's origins, we are not being faithful to the concept of Reiki energy.

Dr. Usui

That said, you will hear about Dr. Usui, the Japanese businessman/teacher/healer who "discovered" Reiki energy during a meditation on Mt. Kurama.  This much is agreed on.

Mr. Hayashi

Mr. Hayashi was trained by Dr. Usui.  He is the master who attuned Mrs. Takata in the 40's.

Mrs. Takata

Reiki was introduced to the West in the 40's through Mrs. Takata, a Japanese-American who lived in Hawaii.  She passed on information about Dr. Usui and his educational background that people have not been able to verify.  However, consider the time - just after the war with Japan.  Mrs. Takata - whether by design or information wrongly given to her - described a Japanese-"discovered" healing process in a manner that was perhaps more acceptable to the people in the United States.

Mrs. Takata gave Reiki treatments and attunements.  In the last ten years of her life, she attuned 22 masters listed below.

George Araki
Barbara McCullough
Beth Grey
Ursula Baylow
Paul Mitchell
Iris Ishikura (deceased)
Fran Brown
Barbara Weber Ray
Ethel Lombardi
Wanja Twan
Virginia Samdahl
Phyllis Lei Furumoto
Dorothy Baba (deceased)
Mary McFaden
John Gray
Rick Bockner
Bethel Phaigh (deceased)
Harry Kuboi
Patricia Ewing
Shinobu Saito
Kay Yamashita (Takata's Sister)
Barbara Brown

She made them promise to charge $10,000 for a master attunement and to keep the Reiki information and process a secret.

One master decided that Reiki was too important a tool to mankind to limit access and charged a more reasonable fee.

From that master, Reiki spread more rapidly.

Is there a TRUE Reiki system?

Much controversy revolves around the TRUE system.

In fact, some Reiki researchers have discovered that the school of Dr. Usui continues to exist in Japan today.  It is rather private and not much information has been shared so far.

In fact, the masters attuned by Mrs. Takata shared their information at a meeting soon after her passing.  They found some similarities in their application of Reiki and some differences.

In fact, some of those first 22 masters have tweaked Reiki processes themselves, creating their own slant on Reiki.

In fact, others who have use Reiki for years have added to Reiki, such as William Rand at the International Center for Reiki Training.  His program includes Tibetan symbols for Reiki.  Diane Stein, author of Essential Reiki has discussed a number of "additions" to Reiki. (more comments about Stein on symbols page.)

Is this bad?

I don't think so.  This is progress.  As an energy system, Reiki must be expansive.  Just the thought of energy makes growth obvious.  Stagnant energy is an oxymoron.

As you explore Reiki, be open, be excited, be in touch with your core and its response to the different Reiki directions.  Some will resonate with you, some won't.  Just honor them all with love.  Reiki can only be happy in expanding.

As you explore Reiki, always be respectful.  You will find some who share the symbols.  I don't feel that is appropriate.  More on that on the symbols page.

In Reiki Light and Love.
